The Porzellansammlung (Porcelain Collection) is the second major museum in the Zwinger. The collection was started by Augustus the Strong in 1717. He intended to convert the Japanese Palace in Dresden-Neustadt to display his Asian porcelain collection, which comprised more than 14,500 pieces. The collection survived World War II undamaged but was transported to Russia and only returned in 1958. The core of the original collection was Chinese ceramics from the third to 17th centuries as well as Japanese Imari Porcelain from around 1700. Also on display are the Dragoon Vases – large blue and white vases that Augustus obtained from Prussia’s King FriedrichWilhelm I in exchange for 600 Saxon Dragoons (soldiers). The current collection has 8,000 Meißen pieces including some of the earliest examples produced by Johann Friedrich Böttger, the first European to produce porcelain. An entire room is dedicated to large animal figures produced by Meißen.

Entrance to the museum is from the Glockenspiel pavillon.
